History of turbochargers

The turbocharger was first used on sports cars or formula cars to make the engine emit more power.

The engine generates power by burning fuel in the cylinder. The amount of fuel input is limited by the amount of air sucked into the cylinder, and the generated power is also limited. If the running performance of the engine is at its best, increase it. The output power can only increase the amount of fuel by compressing more air into the cylinder, increasing the combustion function. Under the current technical conditions, the turbocharger is the only mechanical device that can increase the output power of the engine under the same working efficiency. A turbocharger is actually an air compressor that uses compressed air to increase the amount of intake air. It uses the inertial force of the exhaust gas from the engine to push the turbine in the turbine chamber. The turbine drives the coaxial impeller. The impeller presses the air sent by the air filter pipe to pressurize it into the cylinder. When the engine speed increases, the exhaust gas discharge speed and the turbine speed also increase synchronously. The impeller compresses more air into the cylinder. The increase in air pressure and density can burn more fuel, correspondingly increase the fuel amount and adjust the engine. With the speed, you can increase the output of the engine.

However, although the turbocharger has the function of assisting the engine to increase the force, it also has its shortcomings. The most obvious one is the “lag response”, that is, the slow response of the throttle due to the inertia of the impeller, even after the improvement. The reaction time is also 1.7 seconds, causing the engine delay to increase or decrease the output power. For a car that suddenly accelerates or overtakes, it will feel a bit uncomfortable in an instant. But with the improvement of technology, this shortcoming is being gradually overcome.

In the last 30 years, turbochargers have been popularized in many types of vehicles, which make up for the inherent shortcomings of some naturally aspirated engines, so that the engine can increase output power by more than 10% without changing the cylinder working volume. Therefore, many automobile manufacturing companies use this supercharging technology to improve the output of the engine, so as to achieve high performance of the car.
