Turbocharger Knowledge:

Supercharged

The engine mechanically drives the supercharger for supercharging, called supercharging. When the engine is supercharged, the supercharger is typically driven by the engine crankshaft through the gears. The supercharger generally uses a centrifugal or Roots compressor, and the individual uses a screw compressor. In recent years, new types of mechanical scroll superchargers have also been adopted abroad. Because the drive compressor consumes a certain output power of the engine, the thermal efficiency of the supercharged engine does not necessarily improve, and sometimes it is lower than that of the non-supercharged internal combustion engine. When selecting the boost pressure, first ensure that the required average effective pressure is achieved, and secondly, obtain the lowest possible fuel consumption rate. These two requirements are often contradictory to mechanical pressurization. If the average effective pressure is pursued, it will inevitably lead to a decrease in mechanical efficiency and an increase in fuel consumption rate. Therefore, the boost pressure value should be chosen to find the best compromise between power and fuel consumption. The supercharger system is currently used more commonly in European cars. Since the supercharged supercharger is continuously operated by the crankshaft, the turbo lag phenomenon like turbocharging is not generated. Although supercharger can only increase power output by about 10% and 20%, smoothness is not as good as turbocharged engines.
